Artist Statement

I grew up with a cultured background. My travels and living experiences in four continents have been instrumental in crafting the mind and person that I am. One thing that remains constant for me is no matter where I was in the world, the sky was always there. This perception is something I have always wanted to express through art.

My inspirations have been Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, Tim Burton, Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), various street artists such Keith Haring. I observed that they were all exceptional at creating a vivid personal environment for the context of their works. Like them, I want to create an environment that was above all in transcends real-world physicality and meaning.

The psychological aspect in my work, of it being above all, is suggested by the clouds and lack of definite "ground" displayed. Meaning can be found in the words used and how the symbols and characters are expressively related. I present a consistent style and theme that can be interpreted, but the simplicity of the environment is the key to understanding it. This is why at times my images may defy the laws of physics or logical design, but the main point is always to communicate something genuine that is thought-provoking and hopefully wise.

My work is a vault of expression through images and symbols. Sky is a moniker I use, and the name given to my concept of expression is Sky Welkin. Sky Welkin is an abstraction of life; he is a way to escape the confines of reality and the horrible things that come with it. The foundation of my concept supports the pillars of originality, truth, and open perspective.
